Challenging Competency: A Youth Defender Advocacy Program
Join us for a day dedicated to Youth Defender Advocacy presented by the Washington State Office of Public Defense. The program will include materials from the Gault Center’s Youth Defender Advocacy Program (YDAP) presented by YDAP certified trainers Alex Narvaez and George Yeannakis and a presentation by Dr. Fran Lexcen (Director, Forensic Services at Child Study & Treatment Center) on the state of competency law in Washington. This training will also provide information on CLIP beds and restoration services. Although at times the declining mental state of a youth can be so obvious, judges and prosecutors often persist in challenging a youth’s incompetency. Join other youth defenders to build skills on raising and challenging competency, strategize on improving Washington law, and network with colleagues from across the state.
