Kimonti Carter (pictured here) was convicted of aggravated murder and received a mandatory life sentence without parole for this offense committed in 1997 when he was 18 years old. In 2021 the state Supreme Court ruled that such sentences are unconstitutional for 18, 19 and 20 year olds. Kimonti was resentenced and in July 2022 he was released from prison. The Pierce County Prosecutor’s Office appealed this new sentence, arguing Kimonti should be sent back to prison. On May 23, 2024 the state Supreme Court ruled in favor of Kimonti. He is free!
